The Maiden Edition of the Yoyo Tinz Festival Set To Start In 2 Weeks
From Monday 19th to Sunday 25th November 2018, the Accra based collective yoyo tinz will invite Accra’s population to experience its very first hip hop festival.
yoyo tinz is a cultural organisation aiming at promoting, documenting and archiving hip hop culture in Ghana and beyond, with a strong emphasis on sharing knowledge about the culture and the societies from which they are created. The organisation has been operating since 2013.
The yoyo tinz festival, scheduled from Monday 19th to Sunday 25th November at La Raceway Club, Accra, Ghana, will be physical enactments of all the work the yoyo tinz collective does in highlighting hip hop culture in its fullness – representing all the elements – rap, graffiti, beatboxing, breakdancing, DJing.
The highlights of the festival will be the art exhibition on Monday 19th November at 7pm at BBNZ Live, professional workshops on Thursday 22nd with the epitome of the festival on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th. For these 2 days expect a week-end loaded with activities: breakdance, graffiti, scratch DJing, basketball court, beatboxing, beatmaking competition, video games, vendors, kids arena, lyrical wars, open mic, concerts.
Based on the success of previous events such as the yoyo tinz shrine at the Chale Wote festival, more than 1000 attendees – children, families, hip hop lovers, music lovers – are expected each day on Saturday and Sunday. Especially since reactions upon the unveiling of the festival poster have been amazing.
The official poster is the result of the work of Bright Ackwerh, Addis Ababa Ackwerh and Elinam Quist. The yoyo tinz team has decided to make a bejewelled yoyo goat the poster character of the hip hop festival. Why a Goat? – G.O.A.T is the acronym for Greatest Of All Times, a title disputed by rappers worldwide. Among other enviable attributes, goats symbolise determination, stubbornness, and vitality. Moreover, the goat – as a symbol and as a living thing – has become popular especially for the Ghana folks, in the recent years of Ghanaian politics! That’s the many reasons which explain the choice!
The yoyo tinz festival is solely financed through crowd funding and personal funds. Many partners have joined the adventure and offered support such as: Terra Alta, Lyrical Wars, Bless The Mic, Afriq Hip Hop, Visiter l’Afrique, Right Com, DDP, Aftown, Decathlon and Surf Ghana.
In an effort to make the culture accessible to all, the festival is free and open to all!
