A lot of the problem with music rights in Ghana comes from the musicians themselves. First is the question: who qualifies for rights? Producers and composers are usually left out by the very vocalist they work with. Artistes are very fond of giving CD’s to Dj’s in the street when looking for airplay. The effect is, the music library in the radio station is never used and Dj’s are not encouraged to submit their playlist to their radio stations management. Hence, musicians have no way to quantify and audit whatever royalties are due them independently. Bearing this in mind how does one seriously account for royalties and then make appropriate payments?’’
