“E.L’s “Efa Wo Ho Ben” Video Is Worth The Hype
When E.L released “Efa Wo Ho Ben” last December, the consensus among music fans was unanimous: the V.O Nation act has a song to draw attention towards himself and by extension, place him at the top of the pack; where he belongs. The hip hop record which sampled “Wano P3 Asem” by the Amazing Chorale was an exciting listen in more ways than one. The brilliantly laid sample, E.L’s delivery and the lyrics came together brilliantly.
A few days ago, E.L released the video for “Efa Wo Ho Ben”. Shot by Phamous Philms, the video is an excellently executed work in respect of its art direction and overall concept. This video ranks as the best collaborative piece of art between E.L.and Phamous Philms in recent times. Compared to their previous works on “Abaa” which was a parody of Kanye West’s “Fade” and the bizarrely delivered (by their standards) “Mi Naa Bo Po”, “Efa Wo Ho Ben” stands tall.

The concept of the video follows the narrative of the song. In this video, E.L takes the backseat, allowing some of his friends to play the role of ‘rumor merchants’. The star studded video has cameo from artists like Edem, Ayisi, Joey B, Wanlov, Sister Debbie, Fameye. Others include actor, John Dumelo, blogger, Ameyaw Debrah, Comedian, DKB and radio/TV personalities, Kojo Yankson, Nana Aba Anamoah and Abeiku Santana.
The monochromatic video opens with a shot of EL, his back facing the camera, dressed in an African motif print playing a music conductor’s role. Interspersed in the video are shots of some famous sites of the city of Accra.
The first full glimpse of E.L comes on the 2 minutes, 14 seconds mark. Captured in a squatting position, E.L’s colourful apparel illuminates against the black and grey background. The post-production work carried out on the video is amazing. The impressive use of colour separating technique on his outfit and image is the highlight of the video. The inclusion of the director’s cut – the behind the scene footages made the video much more fun to watch.
The creativity in execution and the simplicity of the video is a reminder of what seperated Phamous Philms from their contemporaries in the visual game. And, the song also affirms E.L as one of the best in the game. Granted most of his releases over a span of two years has not been mind-blowing considering his stature and talent, “Efa Wo Ho Ben”, both the audio and video has the spark to renew interest in him, as an artist and his work as a creative mind. Hopefully, we get more quality audio-visual works from the award-winning rapper.
