ALEWA POETRY SHOW: THE FACE-OFF
Ghana’s foremost poetry event, ALEWA, will this year see two of the leading names on the poetry scene face-off in a scheme of rhymes, words, and punch lines; diffusing knowledge whiles at it.
The two headlining acts, Mutombo Da Poet and Rhyme Sonny have all earned their stripes within the poetry/spoken word fraternity. They have also showcased their talents and abilities on a host of platforms.
ALEWA has, from humble beginnings, become an annual fixture on the growing poetry calendar. This year’s event, slated for 28th to 30th August would be the 5th edition.
MUTOMBO DA POET IS ONE OF THE pioneering figures of poetry or spoken word in Ghana. For almost a decade, Tombo (as he is called sometimes) has been exciting varied audiences with a cache of in depth, invigorating and intellectually pricking performances; strewing topics of social interest to politics into a perfectly painted picture of awe in the minds of his audience.
Having performed on various platforms for different groups both locally and internationally Mutombo released a spoken word album- PhotoSentences in 2012.
Mutombo DaPoet continues to release works and performs for a cross-section of audiences. He is the quintessential thumb around which a noose is tied-his name rolls off tongues when poetry/spoken word is mentioned in Ghana.
RHYME SONNY’S RISE ON THE POETRY/spoken word arena has been profound. With a passion burning bright, Sonny is among the new artistes pushing the art into the national consciousness of people at home, and striving to establish Ghana among the league of countries where poetry/spoken word is a national sport.
Sonny is the co-founder of ALEWA and P.O.E.T.S (People of Equal Thoughts & Spirits)-the largest poetry/spoken word group in Ghana. With his unmistakable signature-Rhymes- he has held many spell bound with his incredible gift. Rhyme Sonny can be described as the Rhyme in Poetry (his last name is an attestation to his gift).
Not only has his enterprising work opened the gates for younger generation of talents, he has also implanted the art into the consciousness of people. The success story of ALEWA has given others the confidence to create events aimed at inspiring nurturing and promoting the art.
With a dose of drama and over a dozen of poets and artistes billed to perform on the night, ALEWA promises to be festive and bellow, continuously the flame of poetry in Ghana.
