SUPERJAZZCLUB BEGIN NEW ERA WITH ‘OFF’
After an eventful 2023 that was characterised by rave reviews for their music, performances and European tour, SuperJazzClub have kept a low profile until last week when the teasers began to unfold to signal something new coming. True to expectations, the Ghanaian music collective, SuperJazzClub, have dropped their first single of 2024 titled ‘OFF’ to mark the beginning of a new era for the high-
flying group.
‘OFF’ is produced by two of the collective’s members, Øbed and Ansah Live, with additional production from DUKE. Another display of great artistry, the single is symbolic of the collective’s unique sound identity which has been in the works over the 5-year period of their existence.
‘OFF’ starts with an a cappella chant before Seyyoh, the group’s only female member, warms the song with her luscious vocals to tell the story of love turned sour as the intimate R&B songwriting travels. Then a lovely chorus complements Seyyoh’s verse and with a creative dazzle, the track unexpectedly transforms into an unassuming percussive banger with a repeated catchy and groovy bass.
Then the collective’s Tano Jackson adds his trademark conversational rap flow with lyrics delighting in the possibilities of exploring a still-lingering chemistry of a relationship that is likely already over . In the end, the song appeals to one’s feels by way of songwriting and at the same time gets you in the mood to dance.
‘OFF’ eludes a specific genre categorization as what has now become known of SuperJazzClub’s works. The song swings between juxtaposing genres, tempos and moods resulting in a track that is informed by 90s R&B and Hip-Hop, UKG and further adorned with jazz-inspired piano embellishment and rhythmic percussion and drum patterns subtly Ghanaian and flavoured with contemporary Afrobeats.
Commenting on the track’s subject matter, SuperJazzClub relayed that: “The song is about two ex-partners who ran into each other again. One party is trying to make the other entertain the idea of them getting back together but probably just for one night. The idea for this track came about after returning home from our European tour last year. Without even listening to the song, the title gives the mood
of the song away. This was a very conscious decision to get the listener to go bananas when the beat dropped. It’s perfect for the clubs but also for hanging with friends in the living room.”
Also commenting on what ‘OFF’ mean to the group at this point in their journey and what to expect in coming months, SuperJazzClub reiterated: “OFF’ is almost an audio recap of all we have learnt and experienced sonically since our last EP in 2020. It’s the best description of where SuperJazzClub is at the
moment; a collective of creatives patchworking various influences together to create something that is cohesive and compelling.
Last year, SuperJazzClub made considerable strides as an in-demand live act last year playing a number of headline shows and festival dates across Europe. These included The Great Escape Festival in Brighton, Brussels’ CORE Festival, Angoulême’s Musique Métisses, Paris’ We Love Green Festival and a sold-out
headline show at London’s Paper Dress Vintage. They also took part in Soho House’s ‘Soho Rising’ international concert series performing at their residences in London, Brighton, Paris, Berlin and Amsterdam.
SuperJazzClub ended 2023 with a spotlight feature in The Independent’s weekly newsletter and a coveted spot in Dazed 100 – the UK media publication’s definitive list of the next generation of creatives driving youth culture forward alongside Tyla, Amaarae and Odumodublvck as the African acts on the list. This coming May, on the 26th , the collective will be playing London’s Cross The Tracks festival in Brixton.
