Writers Project of Ghana Host Author Sylvia Vollenhoven At September Book Read
In our final event for the 2018 Ghana Voices Series, Writers Project of Ghana and Goethe-Institut Ghana proudly present award-winning South African writer, journalist, film-maker and playwright, Sylvia Vollenhoven at a reading on September 26th, 2018 at the Goethe-Institut in Cantonments, Accra. The reading starts at 7.00 PM.
Sylvia Vollenhoven’s seminal dance drama about Khoisan identity, The Keeper of the Kumm , which is based on her novel of the same name, opened on the main programme at the 2016 National Arts Festival (NAF) of South Africa. The novel itself won the 2016 Mbokodo Award for Literature.
Sylvia’s works have won other prizes including the Adelaide Tambo Award for Human Rights in the Arts for the play Cold Case — Revisiting Dulcie September, and the prestigious Publicistklubben Prize for Journalism which she won while Southern African correspondent for the Swedish newspaper Expressen. She has been shortlisted for the South African Literary Awards, been on the long list for the Alan Paton Awards, and was nominated for the 2016 SA Film & TV Awards for Best Director and Best Documentary.
In 2016, Sylvia was commissioned by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC 3) to produce a four-part mini-series called Striking A Chord, which told the stories of iconic South Africans using music and memory.
Between 2009 and 2011, as a Knight Fellow, Sylvia led a project to improve coverage of poverty and development issues in Ghana for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The young people she trained in Ghana went on to win many awards including the CNN African Journalist of the Year prize.
She is founder of the media organisation Vision in Africa, and founding editor of The Journalist (www.thejournalist.org.za), a new online resource for journalism students and media professionals.
