The FOKN Bois Know Their True Friends

True friends are hard to find. This is one of the oldest sayings about friendship. The litmus test for true friendship is confirmed when you find yourself in a desperate and need your friends to show up for you. Those who are ready and willing to go the extra mile for you, the risks notwithstanding, are the one true friends. For the FOKN Bois, their ‘fans are my true friends’.

On this new song from the duo, Wanlov and M3nsa are not even holding their friends to any highly sophisticated, out-of-the-world standards. For them, it is the little things that counts, like retweeting links to their songs. They abhor the phony friends who don’t support them yet would be the first to celebrate their wins.

This fakeness is what they address on ‘’True Friends’’, a song featuring Mr. Eazi M3NSA begins the song with a question: ‘’where all of your friends dey?/ Where all of your paddies dey?’’. Wanlov appears on the song with an indictment charge on their fake friends, rapping: ‘’Most of these so called friends you dey hia them you no dey see them’’.

Unlike the middle finger to fake friends’ approach of the FOKN Bois, Mr. Eazi offer tips on how to identify these fakes, how they pray for your downfall. He assures fellow artist that he ‘no go never fall o/ebi dem wey dem no go move on”.

The piano melody that opens the song is extremely engulfing. (The minor notes are fire). It sounds similar to the keys on Nas’ Adam and Eve (originally sampled from ‘’Gole Yakh’’ by the Persian pianist Korosh Yaghmaei). The beat, however sounds simple – drum, kick, snares. But, you appreciate the production handled by King Stunn, especially the awesome piano solo right after the opening hook. ‘’True Friends’’ is the second single off their soon to be released third studio album ‘’Afrobeats LOL’’.

The first single, Wo Nim Me’’ was released in November. It’s quiet striking that, both singles talk about fair-weather friends. The FOKN Bois are telling all those who ‘never bring cutlass to the fam/ but harvest season they say cut us some yam’ to fucked off. They aren’t true friends.
