7TH ANNUAL EHALAKASA FESTIVAL:
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS 2014
Ehalakasa will celebrate its 7th Annual Ehalakasa Festival in October 2014. Accra will light up with experimental collaborations and performances charged in spoken word, music, dance and theatre for three days. This year’s Festival will happen on October 24th, 25th and 26th.
Ehalakasa is the junction where poetry intersects with music, dance and theatre. Ehalakasa has been at the forefront of promoting, developing and sustaining the growth of spoken word in Ghana. This community of creative minds have realized the need for free, uninhibited self expression and have applied poetry as a potent medium through which to share ideas and express thoughts and feelings since 2007. Poetry forms the foundation upon which music, theatre and dance are interrogated. This inter-disciplinarity opens up the scope of expression and fosters an active platform for experimentation, collaboration and new ideas. The event primarily happens in Accra but travels throughout Ghana.
Who Can Apply:
The Festival is open to active/professional performers (poets, poet ensembles, musical bands, dancers) who are interested in participating in this year’s event. There is no age restriction. The event wishes to showcase spoken word poetry as its primary area while encouraging collaborations between poets and other disciplines of performance art (namely dance, theatre and music). This multicultural platform provides an opportunity to connect participants to the vibrant cultural scene in Accra and beyond.
Application and Selection Procedure:
We request new or existing work to be re-staged in the disciplines of poetry, music, dance, theatre and comedy. Only original works will be accepted. We also accept collaborative works from poets, musicians etc.
Submissions must include:
1. Detailed description of performance or choreography.
2. Sender’s biography (if band or group please provide collective bio)
3. Reference material or links to existing performances online.
Please send your submissions to ehalakasa@gmail.com.
The deadline for submissions is September 15, 2014.
The Ehalakasa team will make the final decision on submissions by end of September. Applicants will be notified immediately afterwards.
